Introduction to Screenwriting with Katie Torpey is an eight-week program for people who have dreamed of turning a movie idea into a bona fide screenplay. It will take place at The Ridgefield Playhouse Rehearsal studio beginning on Tuesday, March 6 thru May 1, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Aspiring writers will learn how to turn an idea into a well-told, formatted screenplay that is saleable!

Katie Torpey, an award-winning WGA Screenwriter/filmmaker with an MFA from UCLA Film School, has worked for numerous networks and studios and sold several screenplays including the 2005 romantic comedy The Perfect Man (starring Hilary Duff, Heather Locklear and Chris Noth).  She wrote and directed the independent film Truth About Kerry (starring Stana Katic of ABC’s “Castle”) which will premier on TV and DVD this spring.  She recently authored a book Just Breathe about her 130-pound weight loss transformation.  In her Playhouse screenwriting class, students will learn the basics of screenwriting, storytelling, structure, formatting, theme, plot, characterization, dialogue, conflict and genre.  The objective of this course is to give students the tools and confidence they need to accomplish writing a saleable screenplay.

In memory of past Board member and Leadership Advisory Board member Bruce Becker, a scholarship fund has been set up so that we could encourage children and adults, whether they could afford it or not, to have the arts in their lives.  In Bruce’s memory we will foster the love of the arts in both children and adults and offer a scholarship for anyone who would like to take either of our classes  but can perhaps not afford to pay the entire, or part of, the tuition fee.  Please call (203) 438-5795 or email allison@ridgefieldplayhouse.org if you are interested in either utilizing the fund or donating to the fund.
