The Ridgefield Playhouse Film Society: Buck
The Ridgefield Playhouse Film Society: Buck
BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning documentary film, follows Buck Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life “Horse Whisperer”, Buck eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. He was also the consultant to Robert Redford on the feature film The Horse Whisperer. BUCK is a truly American story about an unsung hero, an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.
"Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will." So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems.
In the documentary BUCK, Buck Brannaman is an inspiration, not only in his communication, understanding and compassion with horses but also in how he overcame the unbelievable adversity of his abusive childhood. The connection between man and horse is a large focus of the film, but it is also about sensitivity and respect for every living being. Buck’s poetic grace is felt throughout, and it is remarkable to see how truly gifted he is and what an extraordinary life he has created.
BUCK is currently on the 2012 Academy Award nomination “short list” for Best Documentary Feature. Among the film’s many awards include the 2011 Audience Choice awards at Sundance and Full Frame film festivals; Best Documentary awards at the Crossroads, Docu-West, Provincetown and Rockport Film Festivals; and 2012 Audience Choice award at Cinema Eye Honors.
Director Cindy Meehl, producer Julie Goldman and editor Toby Shimin will be on hand for the Q&A following the film.
